Ouanaminthe and the immediate surrounding area have a population of about 100,000 people. Undeveloped and rural, there's not much in the way of agriculture or manufacturing. Per capita annual income is below Haiti's national average of $400. Most villagers live in extremely small homes made of concrete or recycled wood. Sanitary conditions are shocking by our standards. There's no indoor plumbing or electricity in most homes. Streets and roads are dirt and mud. Few people work full-time jobs; most get by as best they can, many as street vendors selling everything from clothing to charcoal. Although Ouanaminthe sustained no damage from the recent earthquake, food shipments from the U.N. were interrupted because of the greater demands elsewhere in the country.
